Washington University Catholic Student Center

http://www.washucsc.org

Goals And Objectives:

The Catholic Student Center is a place of worship and fellowship for Christians in and around the Saint Louis metro area. I was commissioned to build a website that needed constant maintainance and upkeep to function well. It would also inform the community of events, provide an interactive place to gather and worship, and provide an extention to various church activities.

Design Approach:

Version Two ("V2") is the current design and features a global navigation menu at top, and a right hand sidebar that appears throughout the site. In addition, this is one of the first websites coded almost entirely in a server-side language, reducing download time and bandwidth.

Designed:

The website was built during the Fall 2004 semester and was unveiled on the first of January, 2005.

A Tribute to Piet Hein

The Super Ellipse

Goals And Objectives:

Piet Hein was a Danish philosopher, mathematician, scientist and author - and the inventor of the super-ellipsoid. The objective of this website was to display the creative poetry of Piet Hein in a graphical context that would mirror his simplicity in theory, architecture, writing and art. I took it as an artistic challenge to myself in Web Design, and I think you'll appreciate the result.

Design Approach:

Inspired by the world-famous "Danish Design" concept, I took a collection of Piet Hein poems from a small book given to me by a Danish relative, and presented these writings with soft pastel tones, accompanying artwork and simple shapes, not the least of which is the "super-ellipsoid".

The West Wing

Goals And Objectives:

This is a fansite of the popular NBC series The West Wing, starring the ficticious Bartlett Administration. I became a fan after viewing a couple of shows and realizing the strong implied humor and wit that the characters regularly display, not for the rather biased liberalism that I am told turns off many educated viewers. So I decided to create a fansite that would illustrate this humor and the background of the White House.

Design Approach:

Dominant colors here obviously would include red, white and blue. I wanted to use frames to make the site easier to maintain, since most of my site viewers, according to my server logs, view my site with compatible browsers. This will continue to feature new ideas from the show, and stay with the Americana theme.

Erik's Online Headquarters

Goals And Objectives:

Eriks Online Headquarters is my personal website that I acquired in April of 2003. The purpose of creating this website is five-fold: to introduce myself to anybody who may browse my site, maintain a list of interesting links, describe personal hobbies and recent news, provide a guestbook as a forum that others may sign, and most importantly to describe various aspects of my faith in Christ that I currently follow.

Design Approach:

I wanted to use the dominant colors of red, black and white, with a modern flair in this design. Each of the five pages in this site would be consistent in this design, and as the site grows, this same design will form the foundation as my home page. It was derived from a similar design that is currently stored on UMSL's servers.

RiverCity Technologies

Designed in April 2001 to August 2001

Upon meeting the owners in person to discuss this project, they gave me a business card. This card of course had their company logo on it, and I noticed that the dominant color of this logo was a dark midnight blue. A secondary color was red, so I made the site from those colors. I tried to use as few graphics as possible so that the website would load quickly with minimal bandwidth overhead. They had a lot of products to display through this site so I included a lot of interactive features such as a comment and address form to use.

The Current Online

The Current Online

Goals And Objectives:

This is the online version of the student newspaper of the University of Missouri at Saint Louis. I was hired in February of 2000 to help maintain the website, until my promotion in May of 2000 to Web Editor. During that summer, I voluntarily redesigned the entire website and established many operating procedures between the Web Department and other departments such as Photography or Advertising.

Design Approach:

I redesigned the entire site to provide a more professional, consistent look. The basic color I used was navy blue, with a grey marble background for navigation, as shown. I also customized the header graphics and the main navigation bar shown on the top of the site.

Club SLU

Goals And Objectives:

The purpose of this website was to provide recent news, announce meeting dates, describe Club SLU to the community as well as describe a way for people to get involved in the club, provide emergency contact information, distribute the clubs constitution and policies, and announce upcoming events.

Design Approach:

Since Club SLU was closely affiliated with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions of Saint Louis University, the website had to be in keeping with the design of similar pages throughout the administration at that time. Thus I had a tan background, black text, with a blue marble navigation menu. The graphics were provided by the Information Technology Services office, who also provide the official graphics for use on the University website.

Goals And Objectives:

This is a website that I designed for my mom to use in her classes to post grades, assist in homework assignments, and provide background information about the culture of the instructor and the Spanish language.

Design Approach:

The design of this website was based primarily on the functions that I described. I used a light blue color background and other colors throughout the site to compliment the colors of the Colombian flag, where the instructor is from. A redesign is still pending. This redesign will include further homework assistance and links.
